Is an all-electric pickup truck in Tesla’s future? The automaker’s next electric vehicle after the popular Model S will be the Model X crossover, which will then be followed by a new smaller electric sedan. Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk has now confirmed that a pickup truck is also in Tesla’s product plans – and it could come out within the next five years.

Elon Musk revealed details about Tesla’s future pickup truck this week in New York. When asked about possible plans for a fleet truck, Musk stated that the market for fleet commercial trucks is too small and that instead Tesla wants something with more potential. Musk stated that the Tesla pickup would be modeled after the Ford F-Series truck, which is the most popular vehicle sold in the U.S.

An electric pickup truck could have enormous potential for Tesla, since electric motors have lots of low end torque, which is perfect for trucks. Pickup trucks also drink a lot more fuel than cars, so the fuel savings could be even more significant for an electrified pickup.
