New Yorkers who pass by DUMBO on their way to work may have noticed a sparkling new addition to the Brooklyn skyline - Tom Fruin’s “Watertower.” The multi-colored water tank is made of colorful salvaged sheets of plexiglass and catches light high above the rooftops. Fruin collected the rainbow-hued pieces from building sites around New York City before using them to reinterpret the gritty water tower into a version of the iconic structure we've never seen before.

During the day, the hundreds of rainbow panes of the water tower mosaic catch natural sunlight, glowing from different angles depending on the time.

At night, the tower will be infused with light projections by artist Ryan Holsopple. The light show will dance within the water tower, providing a free show to onlookers each night of the year.

The reclaimed material sculpture rises to the same proportions and size of a typical New York water tower, paying tribute to the 10,000 water towers that dot buildings over six stories throughout the boroughs.

Fruin’s glittering piece can be seen all the way from Lower Manhattan, framed between the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges. Other artful water towers will be brought to the city this summer, with The Water Tank Project, that will feature artwork by Marilyn Minter, E.V. Day, Ed Ruscha and Jay-Z emblazoned across the tanks.
