The tower commemorates the workers who died while constructing the World Cup Stadium for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. As the construction continues, the death toll keeps adding up as more workers are becoming collateral damage to the upcoming manifestation supposed to celebrate human excellence. This ephemeral installation aims to raise awareness of world-wide issues relating to labor exploitation and immigrant workers’ rights. The goals is to have the inhabit the interior of the Eiffel Tower and would light up every time #eiffeltower is used on social media.

According to 1Week1Project, “[The memorial] is in the form of a tower made of concrete modules, each one representing a deceased worker. The higher the number, the higher the tower…If the death rate is not reduced, the Qatar World Cup Memorial could reach a height of 1.5 kilometers (nearly a mile).” Since 2012, more than 500 foreign workers have died during the construction of Zaha Hadid’s Olympic stadium. Hadid has since become subject of public controversy and has rejected all liability for the work conditions on her projects.
