Tulip Building-NL ArchitectsSpecial requirements for the Turnaccommodatie Nieuw Welgelegen (TNW) in Utrecht demanded a unique design. The brief for the sports hall would not allow for windows on the sides of the buildings for reasons of privacy, safety and performance for the athletes. But a completely windowless gym would be dark and unpleasant, so NL Architects came up with a creative solution to filter natural daylight into the space. They peeled back the edges of the walls in a tulip-like profile to create a thin skylight that wraps around its perimeter, meeting the goals of the design without sacrificing natural light.1
Tulip Building-NL ArchitectsThe TNW Tulip sports hall is home to four individual gymnastics clubs and is used exclusively for practice and competitions.2
Tulip Building-NL ArchitectsLocated in the center of Utrect, the hall is part of a much larger redevelopment of a sports complex and is situated next to a school and a soccer club.3
Tulip Building-NL ArchitectsTNW sports hall includes a large open space for practice and competitions, along with offices, locker rooms, bathrooms, and a top floor viewing area for spectators.4
Tulip Building-NL ArchitectsThe developers of the club decided it would be best if there were no windows at all in the building on the sides.5
Tulip Building-NL ArchitectsThis was for three reasons. First, for serious training and competition, windows can cause undesirable effects like glare, too much contrast or it can be a distraction.6
Tulip Building-NL ArchitectsSecond, the area is not the safest and the streets surrounding it used to be covered in shattered glass from cars being broken into, so by minimizing glass on the building, it's safety could be maintained.7
Tulip Building-NL Architectsnd thirdly, since many young girls would be practicing inside, the developers thought it best to eliminate the ability for anyone to look inside.8
Tulip Building-NL ArchitectsThey were concerned that perverts would try to catch peeks of the girls in actions.9
Tulip Building-NL ArchitectsBut without any windows at all, gymnastics halls tend to be dark, gloomy and lit with fluorescent lights.10
Tulip Building-NL ArchitectsWanting a better solution they tasked NL Architects to come up with a better alternative.11
Tulip Building-NL ArchitectsTheir solution was to peel away the sides of the walls at the top to let natural daylight in.12
Tulip Building-NL ArchitectsThe facade bends at the top, light infiltrates in and reflects off the sides of the walls. Additional skylights in the roof along with artificial lights provide more light for the space below.13
Tulip Building-NL ArchitectsThe result is a bright and pleasant space that meets the requirements of the gymnastics hall.14
