South Street Fitness MachinesInhabitat editor <a href="http://inhabitat.com/author/jill">Jill Fehrenbacher</a> stumbled upon something very interesting this morning on the Lower East Side - free outdoor exercise machines along the <a href="http://inhabitat.com/nyc/shop-architects-unveils-new-east-river-waterfront-esplanade-renderings/">East River Waterfront Esplanade</a>! The outdoor gym, made up of equipment produced by <a href="http://www.gametime.com">GameTime</a>, is part of Phase 3 of the esplanade, which aims to create active programming along the water. The various machines were already being used by several in-the-know denizens when Jill stopped by, but we have a feeling that things will get more crowded once people realize that they can get in their morning workouts gratis by the cool breeze of the river.1
South Street Fitness MachinesThe new outdoor gym on South Street opened to the public on Friday, May 15th and it didn't take long for neighborhood residents to catch on.2
South Street Fitness MachinesAlthough, as you can see from our photos, many machines were still unoccupied on a weekday morning.3
South Street Fitness MachinesThere are 12 exercise machines available: a cardio walker, a bench dip station, a double hip flexer, a body row, an elliptical machine, a double strider, a leg press, a chest press, a rowing machine, a chin-up bar station, and a double shoulder rotator.4
South Street Fitness MachinesAccording to the <a href="http://www.nycedc.com/">New York City Economic Development Corp.</a>'s Ian Fried, the equipment is intended for use by a wide-set of age groups 16 years+ and some of the machines can even be used by more than one person at a time.5
