IS IT GREEN?: Designer Totes

Lately you may have noticed that trendy designer tote bags have become a charged medium for design and self expression. Touting sleek graphics and slogans such as “I am Not a Plastic Bag”, these reusable bags have become a way to wear your environmental awareness on your sleeve. However these bags are often produced overseas from non-organic cotton, and does anyone ever use their designer totes to replace plastic bags at the supermarket? Fearing that eco-marketed bags have become objects of over-consumption themselves, we decided to take an in-depth look at these issues of style over substance.

I like the idea of using plastic bags to create the totes! I am totally guilty of using plastic bags when I go to the store and I never really thought of getting a tote like this. Of course, not everyone will embrace these totes: it’s so easy just to carry your groceries home in the bags provided for you, especially if you have a lot of groceries. I look forward to a future where hopefully I won’t see plastic bags blowing around the streets on a windy day.

I don’t understand all of the self righteousness associated with green products. Does the bag really need to announce its greenness? I understand its an attempt to promote the practice, but I find the constant slogans pretentious and condescending. “Look at me, I’m greener than you.” ? I don’t think this really inspires anyone to go out and buy a reusable bag who hasn’t already.
On a positive note, I am seeing a huge change in the number of people using cloth bags. Very encouraging.

I enjoying using fashionable cloth bags at the grocery store. I agree that any bag is better than plastic, but I would not purchase one from Chinese sweatshop. Think of those poor people. Why not just buy one that is fashionable, or handmade.
I am sure that people will start coming around, especially if they impose a tax on plastic bags.
I think that the stores, grocery and otherwise, should charge five cents a bag for the plastic/paper. That would get people to rethink the wonderful convenience of cloth reusable bags.

  4. So this is how the “I am not a plastic bag” tote started! I’ve always thought it’s just another everyday bag people can use for work or school, because although I have seen much of this bag, it’s not in supermarkets. I also don’t think people are using this to replace plastic shopping bags. On another note: I support the eradication of plastic bag consumption, although I am not really into the idea of replacing them with designer reusable bags. Designer reusable bags would just end up being used as an alternative to people’s everyday bags. I’d rather that we get ordinary reusable shopping totes that certified environment-friendly and, most of all, cheap.

Hi, I enjoy Louis Vuitton or anything fashion for that matter! I was searching the web for some new louis vuitton luxury items and I stumbled upon this article. This is a cool site and I wanted to post a little note to let you know, good job! Thanks Meme

  6. You really make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this matter to be really something that I think I would never understand. It seems too complex and very broad for me. I’m looking forward for your next post, I’ll try to get the hang of it!
