In April of 2006, Aveda premiered their Ecoture collection at the LOHAS convention in California, showcasing dresses fabricated out of materials ranging from lace made from recycled plastic to sandalwood sourced from aboriginal communities. The collection was designed in partnership with London-based fashion designer Deborah Milner to raise ethical and environmental awareness within the fashion industry. Each dress tells a different story and reflects Milner’s long-standing dedication to environmental sustainability. Below, Deborah kindly agreed to answer some questions about the Ecoture collection.

I was wondering how affordable this green clothing is. I find it is more expensive to be green and working for a non-profit organization doesn’t help, but it makes me feel good at the end of the day.

I came across an article in a back copy of my Selvedge magazine about your wonderful dresses – it is so appropriate for me because I am making a small collection of clothes out of South American jute coffee sacks for my exhibition at art college. I was also intrigued and inspired by a tribe I stayed with in the Madidi National Park on a tributory river of the Amazon in Bolivia. My sacks read ‘Use jute; save the Amazon’.
I have also used applique, fringing, plaiting …….

Five years ago I made a bustier from pink bubble wrap, making hundreds of tiny flowers to embelish it!
So, you can see I am very interested in your work too.

Kind regards from sunny Jersey! – Laraine Swift – mature art student!!
