With more and more people working from home these days, there has also been an increased demand for pop-up home offices that set up in a snap. We've seen officepods, backyard sheds, and prefab huts, and now UK-based designer and builder Roomworks is serving up energy-efficient and green-roofed garden offices that are completely customizable little spaces for your dream office or studio.
Rooomworks garden offices are designed to minimize energy use in both the summer and the winter. Each unit is constructed out of structural insulated panels (SIPs) and FSC-certified western red cedar. The SIPs were chosen for their fast and cost-effective construction as well as their insulating properties, while the red cedar was chosen because it is light, which reduces the amount of concrete used in the foundation. Red cedar can also be left untreated, is resistant to warping, shrinking, decay and insects, and is one of the best thermal and acoustic insulator of all the commonly available softwoods.
Roomworks garden buildings can be customized in shape, size, layout and amenities like bathrooms, lighting, and more. A low-maintenance green roof planted with a mix of around 15 different varieties of sedum and meadow flowers provides a layer of insulation that helps reduce energy costs in the winter and the summer. Roomworks takes care of all the details — from design, planning, and installation to interior decorating — and it should only take approximately two weeks to install your garden office.
In 2009, Roomworks was given the Gold Award for the Best Garden Building by the House Beautiful Awards. Prices for a 2.8 x 2.8 meter garden building start at £9,950.
