Sometimes tiny apartments can be intimidating, so calling an expert in can help maximize space without sacrificing style - and that's exactly the premise behind the new SpacesTV series, “Thank God I Hired a Designer.” Adrian’s historic Upper West Side apartment hadn’t been renovated since the 1950s, so he enlisted designer West Chin to help create a cozy and welcoming space by incorporating innovative storage solutions into the design aesthetic. We think the result is both elegant and functional - step into our photo gallery to see more!

West began by developing storage space throughout the room that can double as function and aesthetic.

The ceiling was giving a sweeping new look, with the addition of a curved addition that extends over the dining room. This not only creates an intimacy around the dining table, but also masks the room’s sound system, which is behind the curvature.

The stereo and CD player is also encased at wall height within the curved addition. The shelving below the stereo extends for the length of the wall, and opens to accommodate extensive storage for CDs, dinnerware, and glasses.

Across the room, West saw another storage opportunity in the window. Above the radiator, he created a cushioned window seat, that allows the clients to relax while overlooking Central Park. Part of the base of the seat has a heat vent, but the rest opens for everyday storage, concealing boxes and bric a brac.

The old fireplace was given a sleek, modern facelift, and blends into a storage wall that has a built in shelf. The absence of the mantle opens up that wall, and gives the client’s piano center stage.

Without West Chin, the client Adrian feels he could not have created such a harmonious space that stores and conceals his family’s belongings.
