Berlin’s offbeat designhouse AMBIVALENZ is introducing two knew innovative furniture collections at the Designers Fair 2012. Held in Cologne this week, the designers will debut two models that fold out from a single piece of board. The multi-use pieces, called FLÄPPS and STREIPS look great, and transport easily as well.

FLÄPPS can look at first glance like a simple rectangular art print. In plain white, black and white text balloons, a bouquet of flowers on blue, or patterns of colorful line, the wooden piece looks like something to decorate your apartment with, rather than furniture

Each of the two panels within the rectangle are attached to sturdy folding hinges. One folds to the front to create a seat, and the other to the back to create the sturdy support. The best part is storage- a stack of FLÄPPS folding chairs require very little storage space, with a set of six fitting easily under a couch or in a closet!

The STREIPS model is a rectangle of attached slats, also emblazoned with printed pattern or artwork on either side of the wood. But with the turn of a gear, the flat board opens, splaying each slat in opposite directions, but attached with strings that become taut. The criss cross piece can we used as an easy fold out seat, or turned upside down and used as a magazine rack. Customers can even buy a translucent plexiglass top in a rich blue hue, making STREIPS an easily foldable end table.

Aside from being incredibly stylish, and easily storable, both pieces lower their carbon footprints by being flat packed when shipped and transported, saving room and energy when going from place to place!

We look forward to seeing more of AMBIVALENZ’s uncommonly fresh designs.
