Beach 30 Pavilion, the latest in a series of structures meant to rejuvenate the Far Rockaways, was unveiled last week, and we couldn’t help but admire its unique, wave-like form. Designed by WXY Architecture and landscape designers Quennell Rothschild and Partners, LLP, the structure serves as a comfort and park maintenance station as well as an outdoor classroom. The new pavilion draws heavily from its beachfront surroundings, and features sea-glass greens, ample light and a decidedly postmodernist, Palm Springs feel.
Beach 30 Pavilion’s seating and furniture use rounded contours and a smooth finish, while restrooms rely on natural lighting and glazed green tiles to further echo the “soothing” seaside look. A recycled plastic “boardwalk” beneath the structure’s roomy, 15-foot ceilings completes the beachy picture.
The Far Rockaway Master Plan also includes Beach 19 Stage and Arbors Structures at East Park with funding through PlaNYC, a long-term planning initiative of the Bloomberg Administration and Rockaway Waterfront Alliance. If the Beach 30 Pavilion is any indication of what’s to come, we think Far Rockawayers are in for a real treat!
