- The David Salle Residence in Fort Greene, BrooklynThough it's usually Manhattan that gets all the attention when it comes to real estate, Brooklyn also plays host to a number of spectacular homes worthy of the pages of Dwell magazine. Over the last 10 years, this borough to the east has brought in plenty of interest from those looking for more than a cramped apartment to call home. And these industrious residents have taken New York living to the next level with eco-friendly additions that range from green roofs to rainwater collection. Last fall we had the opportunity to check out three incredible homes located in the Boerum Hill and Fort Greene neighborhoods of Brooklyn. Click through our photo gallery for a peek into these private homes!1
- The David Salle Residence in Fort Greene, BrooklynIn the late 1990s, artist David Salle purchased two derelict buildings in Brooklyn. Salle wanted to turn the 10,000 sq ft structures into a joined residence and a private studio. He turned to "the artists' architect" Christian Hubert to lead the rehabilitation, and Hubert teamed up with architect David Fratianne, working over two years making Salle's dream a reality. Today, the buildings stands as one of the most iconic architectural works in Fort Greene. Among the home's most stunning features are the artist’s floor-through studio, a third-floor bedroom with a garden-terrace on two sides, and a new zinc-covered roof that curves down to become the exterior wall of the three-story extension.2

- The State Street Townhouse in BrooklynArchitect Ben Hansen’s State Street townhouse is a contemporary masterpiece located in one of Brooklyn's most charming neighborhoods. This stunning home features an open plan and high-ceilings reminiscent of California moderns. The architecture designed the space to put the kitchen at the heart of the home. Upstairs, the couple’s three children share two bedrooms with a connecting bathroom, and this floor also finds access to a spectacular green roof that stores rainwater and nourishes the ground floor garden. Their backyard is another gem with its pair of swings, sandbox, and BBQ--perfect for gatherings during the warm months.12

- Dean Street Townhouse BrooklynThe Dean Street townhouse was once a blight in the neighborhood of Boerum Hill. Dilapidated and structurally compromised, bringing this 4,600 square feet home up to code was no east task. Architect Clay Miller, of Bergen Street Studio, revived the property both inside and out. In his restoration, the architect wanted vegetation and glass rails to enliven the interior and details such as a green wall, garden, and expansive windows help the family connect with nature.29
