Soaring city of “Vertical Factories” would produce goods made for New Yorkers by New Yorkers

What if New Yorkers could subsist completely on products made right here in the city? Architect <a href="http://stuartbeattiedesign.com" target="_blank">Stuart Beattie</a>’s design <a href="http://www.evolo.us/competition/vertical-factories-in-new-york/" target="_blank">Made In New York</a> envisions a series of vertical factories on the Greenpoint, Brooklyn waterfront that would allow NYC to meet its demand with its own supply. Chosen as an Honorable Mention in the <a href="http://inhabitat.com/tag/evolo-skyscraper-competition/" target="_blank">2015 eVolo Skyscraper Competition</a>, Made in New York is also a reaction to the city’s rising population. By building up instead of out, Beattie’s plan is focused on keeping manufacturing stateside, while reestablishing more <a href="http://inhabitat.com/nyc/photos-makerbot-opens-new-50000-sq-ft-3d-printer-factory-in-brooklyn/" target="_blank">factory production in Brooklyn</a>.

As New York’s population booms, more and more land becomes devoted to <a href="http://inhabitat.com/nyc/new-yorks-nordstrom-tower-will-be-the-worlds-tallest-residential-building/" target="_blank">rising residential towers</a> to house new comers.

With this influx of locals, the demand for goods grows exponentially, contrasted by the growing lack of space for industrial businesses and factories.

Inspired by the new residential towers that are popping up around the boroughs, Beattie’s design will also take factories upward.

Arranged along the coast by <a href="http://inhabitat.com/nyc/tag/greenpoint-brooklyn/" target="_blank">Greenpoint, Brooklyn</a>, the 21 towers would act as an archipelago of industry, interconnected with highways and train lines.

Each tower could support 103,950 square feet of manufacturing space, allowing 52 to 81 small industries to produce there, creating 1,000 jobs per tower for incoming New Yorkers. The towers are encased with an exoskeleton structural system which allows for maximum space inside.

By returning massive manufacturing to New York from around the country or overseas in China and India, Made in New York would keep a growing New York sustainable for the future. Transportation costs for importing goods would help strengthen the dollar, while the presence of manufacturing towers would meet future demands without issue.
