The Discovery Factory is an Experimental Space in an Old Philips Factory Where Kids Can Learn About Sustainability

    Every Sunday and Wednesday, kids in the Dutch city of Eindhoven can let their creativity run wild in an old <a title="The Discovery Factory in an Old Philips Factory is an Experimental Building Space for Kids To Learn About Sustainability" href="http://inhabitat.com/areafiftyone-skate-park-in-eindhovens-old-phillips-factory-is-one-of-the-largest-ones-in-europe/" target="_blank">abandoned Philips factory</a>. Dubbed The Discovery Factory (<a title="The Discovery Factory in an Old Philips Factory is an Experimental Building Space for Kids To Learn About Sustainability" href="http://www.deontdekfabriek.nl/" target="_blank">de ontdekfabriek</a>), the space is located at the S-Strijp, a factory area that used to belong to the electronics company. Flying dolphins, panthers, wooden lions, recycled steel horses and energy-efficient vehicles are just a handful of the projects designed to teach young people about crafts and sustainability.

    Located in a space overlooking wide grassy areas that used to belong to Philips, The Discovery Factory is the perfect space for playing and learning.

    With no need to book in advance, children can pop-up for an afternoon of making guided by students, businesses, artists, engineers and other inventors as well as Design Academy of Eindhoven’s graduate Jonathan Hofmeijer.

    With high ceilings, plenty of natural light, varied materials, plenty of tools and guidance, children enjoy a space that will see them and their friends, become inventors!

    Some of the many fantastic activities at The Discover Factory include creating a Mechanical Circus with recycled materials featuring kinetic energy powered animals.

    Other activities could be making an Spaghetti Tent, a windmill or an electric-car and making movies with them.
