The Kolonihavehus structure made its debut a few years ago in Copenhagen, where Fruin built the installation in front of the Royal Danish Library. Fruin is known for his talent in converting reclaimed materials into brilliant art installations and the Kolonihavehus is no exception. The eye-catching art piece is made out of hand-welded iron and more than 30 individual panels of reclaimed plexiglass. Thanks to its lightweight nature, the installation is portable and often commissioned by the performance group CoreAct.

In its most recent New York setting, the colorful 12′ x 12′ x 14′ structure is illuminated from inside and emits a romantic kaleidoscopic glow under the shadow of the Brooklyn Bridge. As part of this year’s DUMBO event, two CoreAct performers lived in the home as they portrayed “everyday dilemmas and lifestyle paradoxes in a subtle manner. They have lost the ability to meaningfully discriminate, and are trapped in a long chain of procrastination, mirroring our current social patterns.”
