Dovecote Studio is a unique prefabricated music studio built within the remains of an old red brick Victorian pigeon house. Situated in England's historic Suffolk county, the Aldeburgh Music School studio was designed by Haworth Tompkins to provides artists and staff with a private space to practice and record. Beautifully contrasting the old and the new, Dovecote Studio builds upon the fabric of the Victorian industrial era.
When the architects at Haworth Tompkins surveyed the site in Snape, Suffolk, the only thing standing was a ruinous brick foundation. The minimum necessary brickwork repairs were carried out before inserting a new rusty prefab structure to keep costs and effort low. The architects paid meticulous respect to the original building – some grown vegetation and original features were left in their natural weathered state.
Dovecote Studio’s interiors are bathed in gorgeous natural light thanks to a large north-facing skylight and many side windows. Walls and ceilings are lined with spruce plywood, creating a timber box with relaxing views over the marshes towards the sea. Haworth Tompkins’s Dovecote Studio is a lovely music shelter that has been highly recognized by RIBA and RICS to name a few.
