Indonesian D-Minution House Built for Under $20K

by , 08/14/09

This simple, yet striking residence in Indonesia was built with a surprisingly small budget – $17,500. Looking at it, one would never guess such a low build-out cost, but there it is. The 3-bedroom  D-Minution House is intended to provide affordable housing and was built on a 1,000-square-foot site in Jakarta, Indonesia, by SUB. Studio for visionary design. Constructed with simple materials, such as concrete, steel, wood and glass, the home blends into the surrounding architecture in Jakarta, but is a far cry from the average home.

great project, but could never be built that cheap in us – the price variance is due to one’s purchasing power in indonesia due to lower labor/material costs….

USD17,500 is 175,584,500 rupiah, so I think this says more about the cost of living in Indonesia.

$17,500 is a usual cost when building a house in indonesia, and it’ll contextually expensive when you built it to a 1,050 square feet of space…trust me. i live in indonesia… but this is a great article for marketing a project though.

I’m a native Indonesian, you could buy a house for less than 40k here(including the cost to buy the site). the building you posted here is still under the 40k house in quality but for most people here, this is a good building. I just built my house for less than 40k (the building cost) for 600 sq meters site. The problem about building or buying a house here is you never get any warranty for say 20 years like you may get in Australia. I try my best to make my house earthquake resistant up to a point, strengthen and spending more for the structure, but I don’t know about any standard of quake resistant building.
