54 NYC Bike Share Locations Revealed For Manhattan’s West Side

The nation’s largest Bike Sharing program, scheduled to launch in NYC with 600 stations and 10,000 bikes this July, recently revealed a plan for 54 of the bike sharing stations, most of which will support more than 30 bicycles each. The locations were reveal by the NYC Department of Transportation during a Manhattan Community Board 4 meeting. Also introduced during the meeting were the local requirements for the stations and the strategy for placing 100+ bikes at some of the world’s busiest transportation hubs, Pennsylvania Station and Port Authority Terminal.

New York City Bike Share Expected to Launch in July

With much talk about the forthcoming New York City Bike Share, the Department of Transportation (DOT) and Alta Bicycle Share have been giving sneak peaks of what’s to come. Inhabitat caught them at the Essex Street Market this past Saturday where representatives were on hand to answer questions about the program and show off the bike model. The bike share is predicted to launch this July and will bring an estimated 10,000 bikes and 600 stations conveniently located throughout the city.

New Yorkers, it is time to rejoice! The city has finally selected Alta Bike Share of Portland, Oregon to install and manage our long-awaited public bike share program. The bike share will have a whopping 600 stations, spreading from Crown Heights in Brooklyn to Manhattan’s Upper West side, and have 10,000 bikes available for use. We could see the bike share as soon as next summer, but the best part is that membership will be flexible, and an annual subscription will likely cost less than a monthly MetroCard.

While we sit here twiddling our thumbs waiting for the Manhattan and Brooklyn bike share programs to get rolling, our suburban neighbors will be cruising away. Two municipalities, one in Long Beach, Long Island and the other in Simsbury, Connecticut are working on their own bike initiatives — and they are much closer to launching than NYC. In fact, Simsbury’s is already up and running and Long Beach’s will officially launch this fall. The programs are the first municipal run bike share programs in the tri-state area. We can’t help but be jealous.

Bike rental company Bike and Roll unveiled a new ‘hop on, hop off‘ program at Tavern on the Green in Central Park yesterday, just in time for another great season of summer cycling. The service allows riders to rent bikes and return them to any of the company’s locations around the city. The new program could pave the way for bike sharing programs, which are still in the planning stages in Brooklyn and Manhattan.
