Avid readers of ReadyMade magazine may recognize the work of Edgar Blazona. The San Francisco based designer created a do-it-yourself modernist outbuilding featured in issue #10 a while back (see below). Utilizing entirely off-the-shelf materials available at your local Home Depot (for about $1,500), this “prefab” project was a sensation. The 10 x10 foot structure is code-safe and zoning-friendly and the plans can be had for $35 from the ReadyMade online store.

Any idea how much the modular homes cost?
The info was on ReadyMade’s website:
“Blazona’s ReadyMade shed is constructed from Plexiglas, steel, and prefinished plywood-and it costs just $1,500. Be warned: The instructions in issue 10 are spare, intended for Craftsman-level builders who frame walls in their sleep. Others may consider dialing up a skilled contractor to raise the roof.”
Hope this was of help.
Barry is right about the estimated materials cost for the DIY version. As far as the Modular Dwellings Blazona is making, the minimum starting bid on the MD280 he auctioned off was $39,000. Its unclear what the final sale price was. I’d recommend contacting Blazona directly from his website for specific purchase information.
