As you might have guessed if you tried to google “Spreadhouse“, Peter and Greg also run a video production company by the same name. The curious mini “house” in the back of the coffee shop serves as the production company’s office.
“Spreadhouse is not only a coffee shop but we are also a video production company,” Peter told us. “So the first step was separating the production from the cafe and so our friend Scott Hill built the house by himself. He’s a big man. We then rebuilt the back bar. Scott did this for us as well. We used reclaimed wood from an old fire station down the street.”
In order to realize the relaxing atmosphere they were aiming for, the guys looked to inspiration from their travels in Southeast Asia and built a 40-foot deck raised one foot off the ground.
“The deck was designed and created by our friends Zack Adelson and Josh Curdts at FORMD,” Peter said. “They also designed the front of the bar and baker’s area to match. We want people to sit on the couches (custom-made in Bay Ridge), sit on the edge, lay on the deck, or just generally enjoy the low to the ground environment.”
The plush couches and cushions in the space were also made in Bay Ridge at Abu Akram‘s shop, while the ornate rugs came from Greg’s father’s rug shop (Minasian Rug Company) in Evanston, Illinois.
“The lights are Philips Hue LED lights that are all controlled from our Square Stand,” explains Peter. “They change to any color or tone we want. In the evening we will create a much different feel for the space.”
And we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention Spreadhouse’s menu of tasty beverages and delectable vegan goodies by Cake Thieves Bakery.
