  • Announcing the Finalists of the Bright Ideas Lighting Design Competition
    Drumroll please.... The editorial team at Inhabitat is thrilled to announce the finalists of the <a href="http://inhabitat.com/bright-ideas-competition/finalists/">Bright Ideas Lighting Design Competition</a>! Our <a href="http://inhabitat.com/bright-ideas-competition/finalists/">lighting competition</a> received hundreds of interesting, unusual and inspiring designs for eco lamps, and after sorting through 400+ entries we're excited to announce our <a href="http://inhabitat.com/bright-ideas-competition/finalists/">40 finalists</a>. From a provocative table lamp <a href="http://inhabitat.com/bright-ideas-competition/glowing-schilthorn-transforms-an-old-coffee-pot-into-a-lamp/">carved out of an old coffee pot</a> to <a href="http://inhabitat.com/bright-ideas-competition/booklight/">literary lamps</a> <a href="http://inhabitat.com/bright-ideas-competition/a-bit-of-light-reading/">made from books</a> and brilliant <a href="http://inhabitat.com/bright-ideas-competition/khrysalis-and-kortex-lamp-series/">wine bottle</a> <a href="http://inhabitat.com/bright-ideas-competition/green-glass-bottles-recycled-into-poetic-odyssey-suspension-light/">pendants</a>, all of our finalists successfully showcase the low-energy splendor of <a href="http://inhabitat.com/philips-to-unveil-the-worlds-first-led-replacement-for-the-75-watt-bulb/">LED bulbs</a> with creativity.     <a href="http://inhabitat.com/bright-ideas-competition/a-bit-of-light-reading/">Light Bit of Reading Lamp by Lucy Norman</a> Lucy Norman's "Light Reading" is made entirely from discarded books found at charity shops. Every page is folded in half, producing a circular arrangement which hangs around a ceiling light.

The blender is re-wired so that the original on/off switch controls the light.

Slender shoots made from rubber tire linings are spread in various widths and heights, distributing LED light in a diverse, playful, and flexible display.

Each lamp is 17 inches in length and would be the perfect showpiece in an organic wine bar.

    <a href="http://inhabitat.com/bright-ideas-competition/lamp-packaging-doubles-as-protection-and-fixture/">Packaging Lamp by David Gardener</a> The Packaging Lamp designed by David Gardener, achieves zero waste with it's 2-in-1 design, where the packaging becomes the actual fixture. The structure of the lamp is constructed from paper pulp and houses all the electronic parts of the lamp for storage/transit.

  • Ella" Plastic Bottle Chandelier by Sarah Turner
    <a href="http://inhabitat.com/bright-ideas-competition/ella-plastic-bottle-chandelier/">Ella" Plastic Bottle Chandelier by Sarah Turner</a> Designed by Sarah Turner, "Ella" is made from 310 plastic drinks bottles and has quite the presence at a size of over one meter wide. Each of the 310 bottles were collected from coffee shops and homes and then given a good clean.

Inspired by the classroom setting of Edgewood Elementary School, the soft mood light is diffused by 1/8” thick acrylic panels that are suspended in a volume composed of 256 No. 2 twisted pencil frames.
