The most ambitious part of the project will be the peaking tip at the very end of the pier where visitors will find a triangular wooden platform that slopes upwards. BIG design group says the platform will top out at 17.5 feet in height, allowing for an elevated view of Lower Manhattan. Underneath the platform, there’s a 3,000 square-foot area filled with steel columns as well as a covered seating area. The architects want to use this audience space for general skyline-gazing events and outdoor movie screenings.
According to the Brooklyn Eagle report, the Brooklyn Bridge Park design drawings were first unveiled at a Community Board 2 meeting. The next step of the plan requires the approval of the city Public Design Commission, which is scheduled for a September 9th hearing. For now, there aren’t any hard timetables for when the park will begin construction, nor is there any funding yet for the ambitious sloping platform, which would cost $5 million to $7 million. However, the park says there is already money lined up for the project’s $13 to $15 million landscaping plans.
