Inspired by the interpretation of Easter Island’s Maoi statues as “milestones of Mother Nature,” the architects created a top-heavy, asymmetrical design that alludes to the monolithic monuments. To create continuity, all the buildings are lined up in a row and feature cantilevered upper floors wrapped in bright yellow cladding. The upper floor’s linked bathroom and bedroom are illuminated by daylight through a large trapezoidal window and patio that also create a greater illusion of space as well as views out to the landscape.
To offset the interior’s bone-white walls, bright yellow accents are selectively applied throughout the building, from the spiral staircase to the furniture. The first floor contains a kitchen that leads out to a small outdoor deck and pool. The architects also included a single-story community building at the east end of the site that includes a cafe, recreational facilities, and a rooftop pool.
