If implemented, the East River swimming pool would be located off of the Brooklyn Bridge River Park, and would be accessible via a long pier-like walkway. The public pool would draw water right from the East River, which might sound off-putting to some, but the idea behind the filtration system is that it would remove contaminants from the river water before they have a chance to enter the pool. The + Pool’s special walls would suck in river water and clean it, not just for swimming, but also to be pumped back into the river, improving the quality of our waterways as a whole.

After a successful Kickstarter campaign, the Float Lab is the first step to making + Pool a reality. The test lab is modeled as a tiny section of the pool, complete with a filtration system, and is a partnership between a slew of interested parties including Persak & Wurmfeld, Arup, Olollo, Columbia’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, CUNY, Riverkeeper, River Project and the Hudson River Park Trust.
